A sit pad is a rectangle of foam that costs very little and prevents a specific, memorable discomfort: the slow transfer of your body heat into cold ground. Because the product is so simple, buyers tend to pick on size or colour. The thing actually worth comparing is how much heat the pad stops, and most brands in this category decline to tell you.

What actually matters

  • R-value - resistance to heat flow, measured to a published standard and directly comparable between products. It is the specification this category exists to deliver and the one it usually omits.
  • Thickness - how much material separates you from the ground. In closed-cell foam it is the dominant contributor to R-value, which makes it the best available proxy when no number is given.
  • Foam type - cross-linked polyethylene, EVA or reclaimed PE. These differ in density, durability and how they age, and a denser foam insulates more per inch but weighs more.
  • Reflective layer - an aluminised face that returns radiated heat. It addresses a different heat path than thickness does and works only while the surface is intact and reasonably clean.
  • Weight - the figure that decides whether the pad travels. This category spans roughly 57 to 215 grams, which is the difference between forgetting it is there and deciding whether to bring it.
  • Fold pattern - accordion versus rolled. A folded pad lies flat against a pack and stays where it is put, while a rolled foam pad retains its curl and works itself loose.
  • Failure mode - what happens when it goes wrong. Closed-cell foam has none worth naming, while an inflatable can puncture on the gritty surfaces a sit pad is made for.

The specs, in plain English

R-valueA measure of how well a material resists heat passing through it, where higher is warmer. Sleeping pads publish it to a standard test method, so figures from different brands can be compared directly.
Closed-cell foamFoam whose bubbles are sealed from one another, so it cannot absorb water and cannot be deflated. It is less comfortable than open-cell foam and far more reliable outdoors.
Cross-linked polyethyleneThe dense closed-cell foam used in most traditional foam mats and sit pads. It is tough, does not absorb water, and holds its thickness over years of compression.
EVA foamEthylene-vinyl acetate, a softer and more flexible closed-cell foam often used where some cushioning is wanted. It can be made partly from plant-derived feedstock, which is where sugarcane-based foams come from.
ConductionHeat moving by direct contact, which is how cold ground cools a person sitting on it. Thickness of insulating material is the defence against it.
ConvectionHeat carried by moving air or liquid. It is why an unbaffled inflatable insulates poorly: the air inside circulates between the warm top and the cold bottom.
Reflective coatingA thin aluminised film bonded to a pad surface to return radiated heat. It adds warmth without thickness and stops working properly once it is heavily scratched or fouled.
Accordion foldA pad that folds in flat panels rather than rolling. It packs flat against a pack, opens instantly, and does not spring back into a curl the way a rolled mat does.
Reclaimed foamFoam made from offcuts and production scrap that is ground and remoulded. It diverts waste and typically produces a slightly denser, heavier product than virgin foam of the same thickness.

Green flags vs red flags

  • An R-value is published as a number.
  • Thickness is given in inches or millimetres rather than described as generous.
  • Weight is stated, and the pad is under roughly 100 grams.
  • The foam type is named specifically rather than called closed-cell.
  • Seat dimensions are published so you can tell whether it is big enough to sit on.

Red flags

  • No insulation figure on a product sold for insulating you from the ground.
  • An inflatable marketed for cold surfaces with no baffling or fill described.
  • A sustainability claim standing where the performance number should be.
  • Weight well over 100 grams for a rectangle of foam.
  • Thickness omitted, which removes the last proxy you had for warmth.

How to read a listing without getting fooled

Look for an R-value and stop reading if you find one, because it answers the question the product exists to answer. When there is no R-value, which will be most of the time, fall back to thickness and foam type: more millimetres of denser closed-cell foam means a warmer pad, and that inference is reliable enough to buy on. Check the weight next, and treat anything much over 100 grams with suspicion, since a sit pad earns its place by being trivial to carry. If the pad is inflatable, look for any mention of baffling, fill or a reflective layer, and if there is none, read it as a cushion rather than an insulator. Finally, notice what occupies the space where the specification should be.

How much should you spend?

Sit pads are among the cheapest things you can buy for the outdoors and the price range is narrow enough that budget should not drive the decision. Budget covers virtually every foam pad in the category, including the lightest and thickest options, so spending the least here costs you very little. Mid-range tends to mean larger sizes, reflective layers or branded eco foams rather than better insulation per gram. Premium in this category is mostly inflatables and designer shapes, and in thermal terms the inflatables are a step backwards on cold ground. Because the performance leaders sit at the bottom of the price range, the right approach is to pick on thickness, weight and any published R-value, then buy whichever qualifying pad is cheapest.

Questions, answered

How big does a sit pad need to be?

Big enough for both cheeks and a bit of thigh, which in practice means somewhere around 12 by 16 inches as a minimum. Shorter pads leave your thighs on the ground and lose much of the benefit, since the back of the legs has a lot of contact area. Larger pads let you kneel on them, which is useful for cooking and tent pitching, at some cost in pack space.

Do sit pads wear out?

Closed-cell foam compresses slowly over years and loses a little thickness, and the surface abrades against rock. Neither failure is sudden, and a pad that has lost some loft still insulates reasonably. Reflective coatings degrade faster, since they are a surface layer being dragged across ground. An inflatable seat has a genuine end of life the first time it punctures somewhere you cannot patch it.

Can I use a sit pad as an emergency sleeping pad?

For your torso, in a pinch, and it is a recognised ultralight technique. A sit pad under the hips and shoulders covers the two areas that compress a sleeping bag most and lose the most heat, with a pack or spare clothing under the legs. It is uncomfortable and it works. Do not expect a half inch pad to be adequate on frozen ground, where R-values in the region of 1.7 are a long way short of what an overnight needs.

Are the foam offcuts in reclaimed pads worse than virgin foam?

Not worse in any way you would notice, though they are usually slightly denser and heavier for a given thickness because the remoulding process compresses the material. The insulating behaviour of closed-cell polyethylene does not change much when it is reground and re-formed. The honest criticism of reclaimed foam pads is not the material, it is that the environmental story tends to appear in place of the performance figures rather than alongside them.
