How we judged the field
A sit pad is about as simple as outdoor equipment gets, and it has exactly one function: putting a barrier between a warm person and cold ground. So insulation comes first, and insulation has a standard unit. R-value is used across the sleeping pad category, it is measured to a published test method, and it lets you compare two products from different brands directly. Second is thickness, because in a foam pad thickness is most of where the R-value comes from. Third is weight, since a sit pad is carried far more than it is used and any pad heavy enough to leave behind has failed. Fourth is packed shape, where a flat-folding pad and a rolled one behave very differently against a pack. Fifth is the failure mode, which for closed-cell foam is nothing at all and for an inflatable is a puncture on exactly the gritty surfaces you bought it for.
The result was lopsided. One of these four products publishes an R-value. The other three describe their foam, which tells you something, and two of them spend the space where the number would go on sustainability claims instead. Those claims are specific and checkable, which is more than most, and they are still not a measurement of the thing the product does. The Therm-a-Rest Z Seat wins on a combination that should not be available: it is both the thickest foam pad here and the lightest product in the comparison. Three quarters of an inch of cross-linked closed-cell foam at 57 grams is more material for less mass than anything else, and it adds a reflective aluminised face that returns radiated heat rather than only resisting conduction. The accordion fold is the right pattern for a sit pad, because a rolled foam mat wants to re-roll itself and a folded one lies flat against a pack and stays there. Being solid closed-cell foam it cannot absorb water, go flat or puncture, which means it has no failure mode worth describing. What it does not do is tell you how well it insulates. The number itself is modest, which is the point: 1.7 sits below what a summer sleeping pad offers, so you can work out that it is fine for a lunch stop on cool ground and thin for sitting on snow. Being able to reach that conclusion is worth more than a warmer pad that keeps quiet. At 59 grams it gives away almost nothing to the Therm-a-Rest on weight. Two or three breaths and it is ready. The 75D polyester shell is properly tough for something that gets sat on over gravel. The difficulty is thermal. A single undivided air chamber is a poor insulator against cold ground, because the air inside can circulate: warmed at the top, cooled at the bottom, moving heat from you to the ground by convection. NEMO also publishes a proper specification panel. The problem is the weight. At 215 grams it is close to four times the Therm-a-Rest Z Seat, which buys you a quarter inch of extra thickness. For a piece of equipment whose entire value proposition is being light enough that you carry it without deciding to, that is a poor exchange, and it packs to 12.5 by 4 by 2.5 inches rather than folding flat. What is an R-value and why does it matter on a sit pad?
R-value measures resistance to heat flowing through a material, and sleeping pads have used it as a standard comparable figure for years. It matters on a sit pad for exactly the same reason it matters on a sleeping pad: the ground is usually colder than you are, and conduction pulls heat out of whatever touches it. A sit pad exists to interrupt that. Publishing the R-value is the difference between a product that tells you how well it does its job and one that asks you to infer it from the word foam.
Is 1.7 a good R-value?
It is modest, and useful precisely because you can say that. For comparison, sleeping pads intended for summer use typically sit around R2, and winter pads run from R5 upward.
