Over-the-counter reading glasses are one of the few products where every option on the rack looks identical and the difference between them is invisible until your eyes start aching. The specs that matter are not the ones printed on the box. Two things decide whether a pair is comfortable: the strength being right for your working distance, and the optical centers of the lenses lining up with your pupils, and almost nobody buying readers has ever heard of the second one.
The 30-second version
- Diopters are magnification, not a prescription. The +1.50 or +2.00 on the arm tells you how much focusing power the lens adds, and nothing about your eyes; readers add magnification but cannot correct astigmatism or fix the underlying change in your near vision.
- Optical centering is the hidden spec. Each lens has a sweet spot that should sit in front of your pupil, and multipacks molded to one fixed center for every strength and face size are the usual reason people say readers give them headaches.
- Buy the weakest strength that works. Too much magnification pulls your comfortable reading distance in close, so you end up holding the page against your nose and straining in a different way.
- Lens material is a real trade-off, not marketing. CR-39 is the sharper, more scratch-resistant optical plastic; polycarbonate is lighter and far harder to shatter; unbranded low-cost acrylic is neither.
- A real anti-reflective coating beats a blue light claim. Ghost reflections are what make evening screen reading feel tiring, and a proper multi-layer AR stack does more for comfort than any tint marketed as blue light protection.
What actually matters
- Correct diopter strength is the whole point of the purchase. Strength should be matched to the distance you actually read at, not to the strongest lens that makes small print pop. Overshooting is the single most common buying mistake, and it produces its own kind of eye strain.
- Optical centering determines whether the lenses feel neutral or feel like work. When the lens centers do not match your pupil spacing, the lens edges introduce a small prism effect and your eye muscles quietly compensate for it, which you feel as a dull ache after twenty or thirty minutes rather than as blur.
- Lens material and optical grade set the ceiling on sharpness. Optical-grade CR-39 and polycarbonate stay clear toward the lens edges; cheap injection-molded plastic goes soft and slightly distorted outside the middle of the lens, which is why some pairs force you to aim your whole head at the page.
- Anti-reflective coating matters more than most buyers expect. Reflections bouncing between the lens, your eye, and the screen behind you are a big part of why long evening sessions feel tiring. Look for a faint colored sheen on the lens surface; a totally clear, reflection-free-looking lens usually means no meaningful AR at all.
- Frame build and hinges decide how long the pair survives. Spring hinges absorb the one-handed yank that kills most readers. Molded plastic frames with plain barrel hinges loosen, and heat from a car dashboard warps them out of alignment, which in turn moves the lenses relative to your eyes.
- Diopter range offered by the brand matters because presbyopia keeps progressing into your sixties. A brand that stops at a middling strength forces you to start over in two years; one that covers the full over-the-counter span lets you buy the same frame in the next step up.
- Return window is the practical safety net. Getting the strength wrong on the first try is normal, and a generous return policy turns that from an expensive error into a non-event.

- A blue light claim with no independent verification and lenses that show no filtering sheen at all under a light.
- Owner reports mentioning strength or finish varying between pairs inside the same pack.
- Very high advertised strengths from a brand that offers no way to check your working distance, which encourages overshooting.
- A short or restocking-fee return policy on a product whose most likely failure is that you picked the wrong number.

How to read a listing without getting fooled
Reading glasses listings are mostly photographs and adjectives, so read them backwards: start with what is missing. If the listing never names the lens material, assume it is unspecified low-cost plastic. If it never mentions an anti-reflective coating but does mention blue light, assume a surface tint doing very little. If it advertises a multipack, look for whether the strengths differ between pairs and whether anything at all is said about optical centers; silence there means one mold for everyone. Then look at what is measurable. The three frame numbers printed inside an arm let you match a pair you already like, which is the closest thing to a fitting you get online. A stated diopter range that covers the full over-the-counter span tells you the brand takes the category seriously. A reference to the ready-to-wear near-vision standard, or any statement about power tolerance, is a rare and good sign. Finally, read owner reports for pattern rather than sentiment: scattered complaints about scratches are ordinary, but repeated reports of headaches or of pairs inside one pack feeling different from each other are describing an optics problem no amount of styling fixes.
How much should you spend?
Readers are one of the rare categories where the cheapest option has a real, physical failure mode rather than just feeling flimsy, and where the ceiling is reached fairly early. What you pay for as you move up from the bottom of the market is, in order: lenses made from a named optical plastic instead of generic molded plastic, optical centers handled per strength instead of one mold for everything, a genuine multi-layer anti-reflective coating, spring hinges, and a return policy long enough to fix a wrong guess. Nearly all of that is available in the broad middle of the market, and that middle is where most people should shop, because it is cheap enough to own two or three identical pairs, which solves the other half of the readers problem: never having them in the room you are in. Spending beyond the middle buys hand-finished acetate frames, CR-39 optics with visibly better edge-to-edge sharpness, and eyewear that looks intentional rather than medical. That is worth it if you read paper for hours a day, if you wear the same pair in front of other people, or if you want one frame that can be refitted with prescription lenses after an eye exam. It is not worth it for a pair that lives in a car door. The genuinely bad economy is the bottom of the market as a daily driver: multipacks are reasonable value as scattered spares and a poor deal as the glasses you actually read in, because the money saved buys you the exact defect that makes people give up on readers.

If you mostly read paper, skip the premium and put the money toward a proper anti-reflective coating instead, which does more for comfort.
CR-39 or polycarbonate: which should I pick?
CR-39 if image quality is the priority. It is the sharper optical plastic with less color fringing toward the lens edges and better scratch resistance, which shows up on long paper-reading sessions. Polycarbonate if weight and toughness matter more: it is noticeably lighter on the face over hours, much harder to shatter, and blocks UV inherently, at the cost of a small amount of optical purity that most people never notice at ordinary reading strengths. Either beats unspecified budget plastic by a wide margin.
How many pairs should I own, and should they all be the same strength?
Two or three, all in the same strength. The most common complaint about readers is not optics, it is never having them where you are, so one good pair for extended reading, one pocketable pair for out of the house, and one spare in the room you read in most covers nearly everyone. Mixing strengths across pairs is a mistake: your eyes settle on one and the others feel subtly wrong, and you lose the ability to tell whether a pair is uncomfortable because of the strength or because of the centering.
