Are radar detectors legal where I drive?

Not everywhere. In the United States they are illegal for civilian use in Virginia and Washington, DC, and federal rules ban them in commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds. They are also generally not allowed on military bases, and many countries prohibit them outright. Laws and enforcement change, so always confirm your current state, provincial, or national law and any commercial-vehicle rules before mounting one.

Will a radar detector stop me from getting a ticket?

No. It only gives you a few seconds of advance warning to check your speed. It doesn't make speeding legal, and it offers little help against instant-on radar used at close range or against laser. Treat it as a driver-awareness aid, not a license to speed.

Do detectors work against laser (lidar) speed guns?

Barely. Lidar is a tight beam, so by the time a detector reacts the officer usually already has your speed. Detectors are built for radar bands. Defeating laser requires laser jammers, which are illegal in many places, so don't rely on a detector for lidar protection.

Why did my old detector go off constantly, and do newer ones fix that?

Most modern false alerts come from other cars' blind-spot monitors and collision-avoidance radar, plus automatic doors at stores. Newer premium units use signal filtering and GPS lockouts to silence these while still warning on genuine radar, which is exactly where cheap units struggle. Do I still need a detector if I use a GPS speed-trap app?

They do different jobs. Crowd-sourced apps flag known fixed cameras and previously reported spots, while a detector senses live radar in real time, including mobile patrols an app hasn't logged. Many drivers run both; if you only want one and drive a lot of highway miles, a detector reacts to threats an app can't see.
