A brewing scale is a weighing instrument with a timer, and it is sold with the vocabulary of a gadget. Learning three terms, readability, repeatability and capacity, and one habit, checking the load range a claim applies to, is enough to see straight through most of the marketing in this category.

What actually matters
- Readability - the smallest increment the display shows, typically 0.1 grams. It is not the same as accuracy and it often applies only to part of the range.
- Repeatability - whether the same weight gives the same reading twice. Only one maker here publishes it, and it is the specification a cafe cares about most.
- Capacity - the maximum load including the dripper, the server and the water. Ranges from 2000 to 2500 grams on these scales.
- Scale interval by load - how readability changes as weight increases. A scale reading to 0.1 grams at 100 grams may read to 1 gram at 600.
- Response time - how quickly the display keeps up with a pour. Rarely published and best judged by whether the scale is designed for espresso.
- Water resistance - an IP rating if one exists. IPX3 covers sprays and splashes, which is the realistic hazard.
- Battery and charging - hours of continuous use and the charge port. A pour-over holds the scale awake for minutes at a time.
- Modes - a timer at minimum, plus ratio guidance, auto-tare, auto-start and flow rate display on the more capable models.

How to read a listing without getting fooled
Find the readability figure and then look immediately for the load range beside it. If none is given, assume the figure is a best case measured at low load and treat the scale as unqualified at brewing weights. If a table is given, read where the steps change, because that tells you what the scale actually does during a pour rather than during a dose. Next check capacity against your heaviest realistic setup, which means the server plus the dripper plus the water, not just the water. Look for a water resistance rating and treat the absence of one as a real gap on a product designed for this job. Then read the battery in hours of continuous use and the charge time, since a scale that needs charging weekly will annoy you. Finally, look at the modes and be honest about which you will use: a ratio-guided target weight helps a beginner, a flow rate indicator helps an intermediate, and Bluetooth logging helps almost nobody who is not already logging.
How much should you spend?
The budget tier now buys a genuinely good brewing scale: 0.1 gram resolution, a published IP rating, a day of battery, USB-C charging and dedicated espresso and pour-over modes. That is where most people should start, and the money saved covers a lot of better coffee. The mid-range buys Japanese build quality and complete documentation, though not necessarily better measurement. Premium buys clever interface design, higher capacity and a longer warranty. The flagship tier buys a real weighing specification with repeatability and linearity published, Bluetooth, and a flow rate indicator, and it is a rational purchase for a cafe or for someone genuinely working on their brewing. It is not a rational purchase for making one cup a day to an established recipe, where every scale here performs identically.
Questions, answered
Why does my scale drift during a pour?
Usually because of vibration and airflow rather than a fault. A stream of water hitting a dripper transmits force into the platform, and a scale that responds quickly will show that as movement. Steam rising around the load cell and a slightly unlevel surface both contribute. Put the scale on a solid flat surface, avoid pouring from a great height, and expect the reading to settle a moment after you stop. A scale that never wobbles is usually one that is slow, which is worse.
Should I weigh my water or measure it by volume?
Weigh it. A millilitre of water weighs a gram closely enough for brewing, so weighing gives you volume for free and removes the error of reading a jug at eye level. More importantly, weighing lets you pour in stages and see the total as you go, which is how bloom-and-pour recipes are written. Measuring in a jug also means pouring twice, which cools the water and loses some of it to the vessel.
How do I clean a coffee scale?
Wipe it, never soak it. Acaia specifies a soft cloth with warm water only, Fellow warns explicitly against the dishwasher and against immersion, and even the IPX3-rated TIMEMORE is protected against sprays rather than submersion. Coffee oils are the thing that builds up, so wipe the platform after each session rather than letting it set. If liquid does get in, turn the scale off, leave it open to dry thoroughly before charging, and do not put it near heat.
Does the scale need to be calibrated?
Occasionally, and some makers sell the weight to do it with. A scale that has been dropped, travelled, or lives somewhere with big temperature swings can drift, and recalibrating with a known mass corrects it. Fellow sells a 50 gram calibration weight for the Tally Pro, and Acaia includes a 100 gram calibration weight with the Lunar. If your scale reads a known weight correctly, it does not need calibrating; the point of owning the weight is being able to check.
