The confusing part is that filter and purifier are used interchangeably in conversation and mean something specific on a box. The distinction is a number, it is published, and almost nobody checks it before buying.

What actually matters
- Pore size - the size of the openings in the membrane, in microns. It determines what physically cannot pass, and the category boundary sits between 0.2 and 0.02.
- Pathogen classes - bacteria, protozoa and viruses, in descending order of size. Filters handle the first two, purifiers handle all three, and no consumer device reliably handles dissolved chemicals.
- Cartridge life - rated capacity in litres. It sets the running cost, and on a sealed non-replaceable cartridge it is the life of the entire product.
- Flow rate - litres per minute in normal use. It matters more than people expect, because a slow device gets left behind and the water gets drunk untreated.
- Mechanism - hollow fibre, electroadsorption, ceramic or chemical. Each has a different failure mode, a different weight and a different sensitivity to cold and silt.
- Standard cited - EPA guidelines, NSF P231 for microbiological purifiers, NSF P248 for military purifiers. A named protocol tells you what was actually tested.
- Freeze tolerance - whether the device survives below zero. This is the most common cause of a filter that appears to work and does not.

How to read a listing without getting fooled
Find the pore size first. If it is around 0.2 microns you are looking at a filter, whatever the packaging says, and viruses are not covered. If the page does not give a pore size, look for an explicit virus claim with a percentage, and treat its absence as a no. Then check cartridge life in litres, and check whether the cartridge can be replaced, because a sealed unit means the rated life is the product's whole life. Look for a named standard rather than a claim of testing. Finally, if the media is hollow fibre, find out what the maker says about freezing, because that is the failure that leaves you with a device that still flows and no longer works.
How much should you spend?
Price in this category maps almost perfectly onto whether viruses are covered. Budget buys a capable 0.2 micron filter, and at this tier you are not compromising on pathogen removal for bacteria and protozoa, only on flow rate, cartridge life and how well it integrates with other gear. Mid-range buys longer cartridge life, better flow and system compatibility, which is where most regular hikers should be. Premium is almost entirely purifiers, and the money is buying the virus step plus, in some cases, a carbon stage for taste and chemicals. That premium is essential if you are travelling somewhere viral contamination is real and close to wasted if you are not, so answer the geography question before setting a budget.
Questions, answered
Is water from a fast-flowing mountain stream safe untreated?
Not reliably, and the intuition that moving water is clean is the most common reason hikers get ill. Giardia and cryptosporidium come from animal and human faeces upstream and are not affected by how quickly the water is moving or how cold it is. Altitude helps only in so far as fewer animals and people are above you. The honest rule is that you cannot assess a source by looking at it.
Do purification tablets do the same job as a purifier?
Chemically, yes for viruses and bacteria, with an important gap. Chlorine dioxide tablets handle viruses and bacteria well and are extremely light, but they need long contact times against cryptosporidium, often four hours, because its oocysts are chemically resistant. They also do nothing about silt, taste or chemicals. Tablets make an excellent backup to a filter, since between them they cover what each one misses.
Can I make a filter last longer?
Yes, mostly by giving it cleaner water to start with. Let silty water settle in a bottle and decant the clear part, or pre-filter through a bandana, since most of what clogs a membrane is sediment rather than pathogens. Backflush according to the maker's instructions as soon as flow slows rather than waiting until it is bad. Both practices extend usable life considerably, though neither changes the rated capacity.
What should I do if my filter freezes?
Retire it. There is no reliable field test, the damage is invisible, and a ruptured hollow fibre filter typically flows faster rather than slower, which reads as good news. On winter trips the standard practice is to sleep with the filter inside your jacket or sleeping bag and to keep it against your body during the day. If you cannot be confident it stayed above freezing, treat it as unsafe and use tablets instead.
