What is the actual difference between a filter and a purifier?
Size. Bacteria and protozoa are large enough to be caught by a membrane with pores around 0.2 microns, which is what a filter uses. Viruses are much smaller and pass straight through that membrane. A purifier either uses a far finer membrane, such as the 0.02 microns in the MSR Guardian, or a different mechanism entirely, such as the electroadsorption in the Grayl. The word purifier is not marketing here, it is a functional claim about viruses.
Do I need virus protection where I hike?
In most of North America, Western Europe, New Zealand and similar backcountry, no. Viral contamination of water generally comes from human sewage, so the risk tracks human density and sanitation rather than remoteness. What happens if a filter freezes?
