Most listings bury the two things that decide whether you'll still like the bike in three years (how it creates resistance, and whether it talks to any app or only one company's app) under a pile of numbers about flywheel weight and level counts. Learn to read those two first and the rest of the spec sheet stops being intimidating.

The specs, in plain English

Magnetic vs friction resistanceMagnetic resistance moves magnets closer to the spinning flywheel to slow it without touching it: silent, consistent, and nothing wears down. Friction resistance presses a felt pad against the flywheel, which works but is noisier, heats up, wears thinner with use, drifts out of calibration as it wears, and eventually needs a replacement pad. On a bike you plan to keep, magnetic is the type to want.
Belt drive vs chain driveThis is how pedal power reaches the flywheel. A belt (usually a toothed Kevlar or carbon-reinforced band) runs almost silently and needs no lubrication or retensioning. A chain works like a road bike drivetrain: cheaper, a bit louder, and it wants occasional oiling and tension checks. Most modern indoor bikes use belts, and it is the low-hassle choice for a bike living in a bedroom or apartment.
Flywheel weightThe flywheel is the weighted disc that keeps spinning between pedal strokes. More mass stores more momentum, which smooths out the dead spots in your stroke and feels more like riding on the road. It is not a quality score: a well-engineered lighter flywheel with good magnetic resistance can feel better than a heavy one on a flexy frame, and very heavy flywheels mainly show up on cheap friction bikes because mass is cheaper than engineering.
Power (watts) vs resistance levelsResistance levels are just labels on a dial and are not comparable between brands: level 12 on one bike is not level 12 on another. Watts measure the actual work you are producing, so they are comparable across bikes, apps and even outdoor riding. Most spin bikes estimate watts from resistance and cadence rather than measuring them with strain gauges, so treat the number as a consistent training reference for yourself, not a lab-grade figure.
Cadence sensorCadence is your pedaling speed in RPM (revolutions per minute). A built-in cadence sensor is what lets a class instructor or app tell you to hold a specific RPM and lets you actually see whether you are doing it. Nearly every bike with a console or Bluetooth reports cadence, and on bikes that don't, a clip-on cadence sensor is an inexpensive add-on.
Bluetooth FTMSFTMS (Fitness Machine Service) is the standard Bluetooth language exercise equipment uses to talk to apps. A bike that supports it, or that broadcasts standard cadence, speed and power signals, will show up in nearly any training app on your phone or tablet. A bike without it may still have Bluetooth, but only for its own app, which means you are buying into one ecosystem rather than one bike.
Pedal type (SPD, Delta, toe cages)Toe cages are straps you slide a normal sneaker into. SPD is the common two-bolt clip system, and its shoes have a recessed cleat you can comfortably walk in. Delta (also called Look Delta) is a three-bolt road system used by some studio bikes, with a larger cleat that sticks out and is awkward to walk on. Dual-sided pedals give you a cage on one face and a clip on the other. Pedals unscrew with a standard 15mm wrench (right pedal normal thread, left pedal reverse thread), so any bike can be converted to the system your shoes use.
Four-way vs two-way adjustmentTwo-way means a part moves only up and down. Four-way means it also slides forward and back. A four-way seat and four-way handlebars let you set both saddle height and reach, which is what makes the bike fit your leg length and torso rather than approximately fit. Two-way handlebars are a common cost cut and are the most likely cause of a cramped or stretched riding position.
Q factorThe horizontal distance between the two pedals, measured across the crank arms. A narrower Q factor puts your feet closer to your hips, which most riders find more natural and easier on the knees, and closer to how a real road bike feels. Wide stances are more common on budget bikes with bulky frames. Many listings don't publish it, so if knee comfort is a concern, treat a published narrow figure as a good sign.

How to read a listing without getting fooled

Read the resistance line first. If it says magnetic, good. If it says friction, felt pad or leather brake, accept that you are buying a consumable. Next check whether resistance is numbered or micro-adjustable: 'infinite adjustment' with no display is marketing for an unmarked knob. Then look for how the bike connects. Phrases like 'Bluetooth broadcasts cadence, speed and resistance', 'works with third-party apps' or 'FTMS' mean freedom, while 'exclusive classes', 'app-connected' with no app names, or a big built-in screen usually mean one ecosystem and a fee. Treat flywheel weight as a feel preference rather than a ranking, and give more weight to frame construction, rider height range and weight capacity. Finally, scan the fit details: four-way seat and four-way handlebars, a stated inseam or height range, and included pedal type. Anything a listing declines to state (Q factor, adjustment range, what the bike does without a subscription) is worth treating as the weaker answer.

How much should you spend?

Two things drive cost on a spin bike, and only one of them is the bike. The hardware side pays for magnetic resistance, frame rigidity, adjustment range and build quality. The other side pays for a screen and a class library, which is a recurring fee, not a purchase. The value sweet spot for most people sits in the middle of the market: a magnetic, belt-driven bike with numbered levels and open Bluetooth, which you pair with a tablet you already own and whichever app you like. Spending more is genuinely worth it if guided classes are the thing that will get you on the bike, if you want resistance that sets itself to the instructor's target, or if you want gym-grade durability for heavy daily use. Spending more is not worth it if you are self-motivated and already own a tablet, since a large slice of a flagship's cost buys a screen and an ecosystem you can replicate. At the bottom of the market, put your money into magnetic resistance before anything else: a cheap magnetic bike ages far better than a cheap friction bike with a heavier flywheel, because the friction pad turns into an ongoing cost and a drifting, unrepeatable ride.

What is the difference between a spin bike and a regular upright exercise bike?

Geometry and intent. A spin bike puts you in a low, forward, road-bike position over a heavy flywheel with a fixed or near-fixed drivetrain, so you can stand up, sprint and climb against high resistance. An upright exercise bike sits you taller with a wider, more padded saddle and usually a pedal-and-coast feel, aimed at steady, lower-intensity riding and comfort. Do I need a subscription to use a spin bike?

Do I need cycling shoes, and can I change the pedals?

You don't need them. Toe cages and normal athletic shoes work fine, and many bikes ship with dual-sided pedals so you can start caged and clip in later.
