How to read a listing without getting fooled

Start with the method: repel, kill larvae, trap or zap. For repellers, find the zone size, run time and active ingredient. For larvicides, check how much water each unit treats and how long it lasts. Treat coverage claims for zappers and ultrasonic devices with suspicion, since mosquito control experts have found them ineffective.

How much should you spend?

Larvicide dunks are the budget tier and deliver a lot for little money. Zone repellers range from budget fuel models to mid-range rechargeable ones, plus ongoing refills. Bug zappers often cost more than dunks yet do little for mosquitoes.

Questions, answered

Are citronella candles effective?

They offer limited protection, mostly very close to the flame. A dedicated zone repeller or skin repellent does more. Wind reduces any candle's effect.

Do mosquito traps work?

Some traps catch mosquitoes, but results vary widely by design and location. They are not a substitute for removing standing water and using repellents. Check independent evidence before spending a lot.

Is Bti safe for my pond fish?
