But the number printed on the box ("5 fans!") tells you almost nothing about whether the thing actually cools your laptop. What trips up most buyers is assuming more fans means more cooling, when airflow direction and fit matter far more.

A listing that only brags about fan count and RGB, with no mention of where the air actually goes, is usually a sign the design is more decorative than functional. Also check the supported size range against your specific laptop model, since a pad built for larger laptops can leave a smaller machine's vents unreached by any fan.

How much should you spend?

Cost mostly tracks build quality and airflow engineering rather than fan count.
