How we judged the field
The first thing we looked for was a thickness figure, because it is the number that separates protection from cosmetics and because only two of these four publish one. A 380 micron honeycomb polymer and a 1.2mm viscoelastic composite are doing genuinely different jobs, and a product that gives you neither a thickness nor a material construction has told you nothing about which job it does.

What you do not get is any idea how thick it is. For a new trail bike you want protected everywhere against everyday wear, the Muc-Off kit is the better buy and it is cheaper. For a bike that takes real hits in specific places, buy the Shelter and cut it. Plenty of people sensibly do both, kit on the frame and a strip of Shelter on the chainstay.
What to look for
- A published thickness: in microns or millimetres. It is the number that separates impact protection from scratch protection, and half of this category will not give it to you.
- The construction, not just the material: a single hard layer and a hard layer over a soft one behave completely differently under a stone strike.
- An itemised parts list: how many pieces, what shape, and which part of the frame each is for. A piece count alone tells you nothing.

Does frame protection actually stop damage, or just hide it?
It depends entirely on thickness and construction. A thin automotive-style film is excellent against cable rub, shoe scuffs, strap wear and light abrasion, and it will not stop a sharp stone at speed. A thick viscoelastic product like the 1.2mm Shelter Off-Road is doing something different, spreading the energy of an impact through a soft middle layer rather than just presenting a hard surface. If your worry is a chipped down tube from trail debris, thickness is what you are buying. If it is the grey marks where the cables touch the head tube, almost any film will do.
Pre-cut kit or a roll?
A pre-cut kit is far faster and gives cleaner edges on the areas it covers, and a model-specific kit gives the best result of all because the shapes follow your frame's actual curves. A roll is cheaper per area, lets you protect exactly the spots you care about, and is the only option for an unusual frame or for a thick product where nobody makes shapes. Most people are best served by a kit for the frame and a roll for the odd extra spot such as a chainstay or the inside of a fork leg.
What does self-healing mean in practice?
The film's top layer is formulated so that light scratches close up when warmed, either by sunlight or by pouring warm water over them. It works well on the swirls and scuffs a film picks up over a season, and it does nothing for a cut through the film or for a dent underneath. Will it come off without damaging the paint?
Usually, and the risk is real enough to take seriously on an older frame. Quality automotive-grade films are designed to be removed with heat and to leave the adhesive with the film rather than on the paint. Where it goes wrong is on paint that was already weak, on repaired or resprayed areas, and on decals, which can lift with the film. Warm the film thoroughly, pull it back slowly against itself at a shallow angle rather than straight up, and clean any residue with an adhesive remover rather than scraping it.
Does it need to be applied wet?
It depends on the film and the maker's instructions, which you should follow rather than the internet's. Automotive paint protection film is normally applied with a slip solution of water and a little soap, which lets you float the piece into position before squeegeeing it down, and that is what makes large pieces possible. Thicker specialist tapes are often applied dry with strong adhesion from first contact, which means one attempt per piece. Read the instructions before you open anything, because the two methods are not interchangeable.
