And W&P tells you to flip the bag inside out to hand wash, the opposite of Stasher’s advice to avoid turning bags inside out to preserve the seals. Are silicone food bags safe?
Food-grade silicone is widely used for bakeware and storage, and the US FDA regulates the materials allowed to contact food. Platinum silicone, which Stasher and Zip Top use, is cured with a platinum catalyst and is generally considered the higher grade. Look for a brand that names the grade and lists what the bag is free of, such as BPA, lead and phthalates. A vague "premium silicone" tells you less.
Can you put reusable food bags in the dishwasher?
Silicone bags usually can, and Stasher, Zip Top and Porter all say theirs are dishwasher safe. The problem is the shape: narrow corners do not always get clean, which is why Zip Top designed an open, rounded interior. PEVA bags like (re)zip are different, since the water must stay under 102°F, which in practice means hand washing. Dry bags propped open so moisture does not sit inside.
Can you microwave or cook in a silicone bag?
Stasher says its bags are microwave and oven safe up to 425°F, and it markets the Half Gallon for sous vide. Porter lists a 425° oven rating too, while Zip Top lists the microwave but no oven use. Open the seal slightly before microwaving so steam can escape. PEVA bags such as (re)zip must never go in the microwave or near high heat.
How do you get smells and stains out of silicone bags?
Stasher suggests leaving stained bags in direct sunlight for a few hours and soaking smelly ones in a 50/50 mix of hot water and vinegar. It also suggests baking an empty bag on a tray at 350°F for 10 to 15 minutes to lift odours. Baking soda and lemon help too. Some staining from tomato sauce or turmeric is cosmetic and does not affect the bag.
Silicone or PEVA reusable bags?
Silicone is heavier and costs more, but it handles heat, lasts longer and can go in the dishwasher and microwave. PEVA is light, cheap and good in the freezer, but it cannot be heated and needs gentle washing. If you reheat, cook or wash everything in a dishwasher, choose silicone.
