How we judged the field

Five things decide whether a drain pan is any good, and only one of them is capacity. First, capacity relative to your engine, because the number on the box has to beat the sump plus the filter plus the drips. Second, overall height, because a pan that will not fit under the car is a pan you cannot use, and it is the failure people write about most. Third, whether it closes: a screw or gasketed cap turns a pan into a container you can carry across a garage and put in a car. Fourth, how the oil gets out again, meaning a real spout rather than tipping a wide open tray over a funnel. Fifth, whether hardware you drop is recoverable, which is a genuine design feature and not a gimmick once you have fished for a plug in four inches of hot oil.

That combination is genuinely unusual: nothing else here gives you 16 quarts under six and a half inches, and the wide body is forgiving when a filter starts running before the pan is centered. The problem is everything Hopkins does not say. There is no published drain opening size, no material, no temperature rating, and no description of the cap hardware behind the leak-proof claim. No catch screen or filter stand appears in the listing either. If ground clearance is your binding constraint and you want maximum volume, it is the obvious answer. The Performance Tool W4070 is the pan a lot of people reach for and the one we would leave on the shelf for oil changes. It is a plain 7 quart open tray, 15 by 14.5 by 3.5 inches, with molded handles and a pour spout in plastic that Wilmar says resists chemicals and solvents without rusting or corroding. As a shallow catch tray it is fine, and 3.5 inches will fit under almost anything. The trouble is arithmetic. Ford’s 2026 F-150 manual lists 7.75 quarts with the filter for the 5.0L V8, and GM’s 2024 Silverado 1500 manual lists 8.0 quarts for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s, so this pan overflows before the sump has finished emptying. Even on a 6 quart engine you are running the last quart into a pan that is nearly full, then sliding an open, brimming tray out from under a car. There is no cap, so the oil has to be decanted immediately. Buy it as a coolant or gearbox tray, not as an oil pan.

The ZE700 and the W4077 are close, and the choice comes down to two questions you can answer in your own driveway. Put simply: measure first. If you have more than about eight inches of gap under the drain plug with the car supported the way you work on it, take the W4077, save the difference, and buy a magnetic pickup tool with what you saved. What size drain pan do I actually need?

Start with your engine's oil capacity including the filter, then buy meaningfully bigger. Ford's 2026 F-150 owner's manual lists 6.0 quarts for the 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost, 7.75 quarts for the 5.0L V8 and 11.5 quarts for the 5.2L Raptor engine. GM's 2024 Silverado 1500 manual lists 6.0 quarts for the 2.7L four-cylinder and 8.0 quarts for both the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s. On top of that number you get whatever is still clinging to the galleries, the contents of the old filter when you unscrew it, and the splash that misses the middle of the pan. A container sized exactly to the sump is a container that overflows, which is why we would not put anything smaller than about 10 quarts under a modern V8.

How low does the pan have to be?

Lower than the gap you actually have, measured with the car supported the way you plan to work on it. This is the most common complaint in the category and it is entirely avoidable. The Performance Tool W4070 is 3.5 inches tall, the FloTool 42003MI is 6.25 inches, and the Performance Tool W4077 is 7.6 inches, so there is more than four inches of spread between the shallowest and tallest options here. Ramps usually give plenty of room for any of them, while a car on jack stands at the pinch welds can be tight. Milton does not publish a height for the ZE700, so measure your clearance and be ready to return it if it does not fit.

Where do I take used motor oil?

To a collection site, and the search is easier than people expect. EPA points consumers to the Earth 911 recycling search tool and the American Petroleum Institute's used motor oil collection site locator, and notes that recycled used oil can be re-refined into new oil or processed into fuel oils. In California alone, CalRecycle says the state has certified over 3,000 used oil collection centers that take used oil from the public and pay a 40 cent per gallon recycling incentive. Under the federal rules in 40 CFR part 279 the household do-it-yourself generator is not itself regulated, but the collection centers that accept the oil are licensed and have to meet generator standards. Call ahead anyway, because sites set their own daily limits and some will not take oil mixed with coolant or solvent.

Is a sealed container really better than an open pan?

It depends entirely on what happens after the oil is in it. If you have a shop drain or a waste oil drum in the corner, an open pan is fine and often cheaper and shallower. If the oil has to sit in the garage for a week and then ride in a car to a collection site, a container with caps is the difference between a clean errand and a stain you will smell for a year.
