How we judged the field
Five things decide a drying towel. GSM comes first, and it is the number everyone quotes and almost everyone misreads: it is grams of fibre per square metre, a density rather than a capacity. Size comes second, because area multiplied by density is the fibre mass that actually holds the water, and one of these towels is nearly three times the area of another. Third is weave, since twist loop pulls water in by capillary action while plush pile traps it between strands, and they behave differently once saturated. Fourth is blend ratio, where polyamide content drives absorbency and cost. Fifth is how it handles wet, because a huge towel that becomes a heavy rope is slower than a smaller one you can fold into eight.
The field splits by construction and by size. Twist loop towels are the absorbency specialists and tend to come in moderate sizes. Plush pile towels feel better against paint and are usually sold larger. A third group markets a hybrid of the two without saying much about what that means. The Cloud 9 is the one to weigh carefully, and the argument for it is geometry rather than specification. At 52 by 36 inches it covers about 1.2 square metres, nearly three times the area of the P&S towel, and a towel that size can be dragged across a roof or down the side of a truck bed in one motion, which genuinely saves time on a large vehicle. Chemical Guys describes it as gigantic, fluffy, soft and absorbent, and plush pile is the texture most people prefer against paint. What the page does not carry is a GSM figure, which means the one number the category is sold on is absent from the largest product in it. Its total capacity is very probably the highest here on area alone, and how much highest is unknowable. That is the manufacturer telling you that one towel does not complete the job, and it is the clearest single statement in this comparison. To its credit, Adam’s publishes both the GSM and the dimensions, which is more than the largest towel in this group manages, and the pack options make buying the recommended pair straightforward. As a low-pile towel for glass, door jambs and wiping down trim it is perfectly good. As the towel that dries your car, it means two passes where one should do.

How do I compare a towel that does not publish GSM?

What does twist loop actually do?
Twist loop microfibre is made from long twisted strands rather than a cut plush pile. The twist creates capillary channels that pull water into the fibre rather than relying on it being trapped between strands, so the towel keeps taking water on after a plush towel has stopped. The trade is feel: twist loop is less soft against paint than deep plush, which is why some people use twist loop for the first pass and a plush towel for the final wipe.
What does the 80/20 blend number mean?
It is the ratio of polyester to polyamide in the microfibre. Polyester provides structure and the scrubbing character; polyamide is softer and far more absorbent, and it is the more expensive of the two. An 80/20 blend is the usual mark of a quality towel, while cheaper towels often run 90/10 or higher on polyester and feel less absorbent as a result. How should I wash drying towels?
Warm water, a detergent with no fabric softener and no bleach, and either a low tumble dry or air drying. Fabric softener is the main killer of microfibre: it coats the fibres and destroys the capillary action that makes the towel absorbent, and once that happens the towel is finished. Wash drying towels separately from anything with cotton lint, and separately from towels that have touched wheels or engine bays.
