Sleeping pads have published R-values for years. Sit pads do the same job on the same ground, and three of the four we compared publish nothing.
A sleeping pad tells you its R-value. It has done for years, measured to a published standard, and the number is comparable between brands. You can put a Therm-a-Rest next to a NEMO and know which is warmer.
A sit pad is the same material doing the same job against the same cold ground. Here is what four of them publish:

The number is low, and that is the useful part
The thing worth noticing about the Big Agnes figure is that it is not impressive. An R-value of 1.7 sits below what a summer sleeping pad offers, and a long way below the R5 and up that winter pads carry. It tells you a half inch of sugarcane-based EVA foam is a real barrier for a lunch stop on cool ground and thin comfort on snow.
That is a genuinely useful thing to know, and you can only know it because somebody printed it. The three pads that publish nothing may well be warmer. The Therm-a-Rest is half again as thick and carries a reflective face, so on physics it almost certainly is. But a pad that is warmer and silent leaves you exactly where you started, which is guessing.
What sits in the slot instead
Two of the three silent pads fill that space with sustainability. Big Agnes describes foam containing more than 60 percent sugarcane biomass. NEMO’s Chipper is made entirely from reclaimed and remoulded foam scraps left over from its own sleeping pad production.
Both of those are better than the usual environmental gesture. They are specific, they name the material, and the NEMO one in particular is a circularity claim you could actually audit. When we looked at the product photograph, the Chipper is visibly made of multicoloured foam chips, which is the claim showing up in the object.
The difficulty is that neither sentence tells you how warm the pad is. And Big Agnes, the brand that published the R-value, also has the eco story, which demonstrates that these are not competing for the same space. A page can carry both. Most choose one.
Why the physics does not care about price
The honest explanation for the gap is economic. R-value testing to the standard method costs lab time per product. On a sleeping pad selling at a high price, that cost disappears into the margin. On a rectangle of foam selling for very little, it is a real percentage.
Buyers do not demand it either, because nobody has established the expectation. The sleeping pad category standardised only when a shared test method arrived and the major brands adopted it more or less together, which made publishing a competitive necessity rather than a cost. No equivalent moment has reached sit pads.
None of which changes the fact that the ground is the same temperature under both products.
What to do instead
Until the category catches up, thickness is the usable proxy. Insulation in closed-cell foam scales with how much material separates you from the ground, so more millimetres of similar foam means a warmer pad, and that inference is reliable enough to buy on.
Two caveats. A reflective aluminised face addresses radiated heat rather than conduction, so it adds warmth that thickness alone would not predict. And an inflatable seat breaks the rule entirely: the air inside a single undivided chamber circulates between the warm top and the cold bottom and carries heat away, which is why a one inch inflatable can be colder than a half inch of foam.
In the comparison this left us recommending the pad that publishes nothing, because 0.75 inches and a reflective layer beat 0.5 inches on any reading of the physics. We gave the runner-up spot to the one that told us the truth, including the unflattering part. That is the best a reader can do in a category where the standard unit exists, the test method exists, and almost nobody prints the result.
