How we judged the field
Light therapy is a dose-response treatment, so the first thing we looked for was whether a dose can be calculated at all. That needs two numbers, an irradiance in milliwatts per square centimetre and a session length in minutes, and only one of these four publishes both. Where a maker gives a treatment time and nothing else, the time on its own is meaningless: a three minute session at high intensity and a three minute session at low intensity are completely different treatments, and you are not told which you are buying.
After that we looked at wavelengths, because they determine what the device can address. Red around 630nm and near-infrared around 830nm are the pairing for lines and firmness; blue around 415nm is for acne and does nothing for wrinkles; amber, green and yellow are aimed at tone and redness. Then LED count and how the emitters are arranged, since two wavelengths from the same dual-chip bulb behave differently from two wavelengths from bulbs an inch apart. Then fit and weight, because a mask that does not sit against the skin loses intensity to the air gap, and one that is heavy does not get worn. Omnilux against CurrentBody is a choice between a verifiable treatment and a flexible one. That is a protocol, and every number in it is published. If your concern is fine lines and firmness, it is the most defensible purchase in this category.

Do LED face masks actually work?
Red and near-infrared light therapy for skin has a real research base, and the mechanism, stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin, is well established. What is much less certain is whether any particular home device delivers enough light to reproduce those results, because home masks run at a fraction of clinic intensity. That is why irradiance matters: without it you cannot tell whether a device is a weaker version of a clinical treatment or a light show. Expect gradual changes over weeks of consistent use rather than a visible difference after a session, and treat any dramatic before and after image with scepticism.
What is irradiance and why does nobody publish it?
Irradiance is the light power reaching your skin, measured in milliwatts per square centimetre, and together with session length it determines the dose in joules per square centimetre. Omnilux publishes about 30 mW per square centimetre and a 10 minute session, which works out at roughly 18 joules per square centimetre per treatment. The other three publish a treatment time and no intensity, which means the dose cannot be calculated. It is not published because it is the one number that would let you compare devices directly, and most of them would not compare well.
What does FDA cleared mean here?
Cleared is not the same as approved. FDA clearance for these devices generally comes through the 510(k) route, where a manufacturer shows the device is substantially equivalent to one already on the market and meets safety requirements for that class. It is a meaningful signal that the device has been through a regulatory process and is considered safe for home use, and it is not a finding that it works as well as the marketing suggests. Three of these four state clearance; CurrentBody's Series 3 page does not.
Red, blue or near-infrared?
Red light around 630 to 660nm is the workhorse for fine lines, tone and radiance, absorbed at the level of the upper skin. Near-infrared around 830nm penetrates deeper to reach fibroblasts, which is where collagen and elastin come from, so masks aimed at firmness pair the two. Blue at around 415nm targets the bacteria involved in acne and does nothing for wrinkles. If acne is the concern, you need blue, which rules out the Omnilux Contour line, and Omnilux says so and points you at its Clear device instead.
Are there risks or side effects?
LED light therapy is generally well tolerated and none of these devices use ultraviolet. The common cautions are eye exposure, which is why masks include eye shields or cutouts and why you should not stare into the LEDs, and photosensitivity: if you take medication that increases light sensitivity, have a photosensitive condition, or have recently had certain skin procedures, ask a clinician before starting. People with melasma should be particularly careful, since heat and light can aggravate pigmentation. Stop if you get persistent redness, irritation or headaches.
