The Best Duffel Bags: 4 Compared (and One to Skip)

We compared four duffels in the 50 to 63 litre range on how each maker words its water protection, published fabric denier and coating, empty weight, backpack straps, packability and warranty.

RBE top pick

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L

The Black Hole 55L wins on the most complete spec sheet in the group: denier, laminate, lining, weight and dimensions are all published, and the bag carries as a backpack and stuffs into its own pocket. The Cargo Hauler 60L is lighter, holds a little more, adds lockable zippers and end compartments, and sits a tier lower.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L - our top pick

The short version

The Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L is the pick: a 900-denier recycled polyester ripstop body with a TPU-film laminate, removable padded backpack straps, a published weight of 1,180 g, and a side pocket the empty bag stuffs into. The Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 60L is the value choice and the lightest travel duffel here at 2 lb 3 oz, with stowable backpack straps, lockable zippers, a listed internal capacity of 63 L, and the ability to pack into its own end pocket. Both makers call their bags weather-resistant or water-resistant, not waterproof, and that wording is accurate. The YETI Panga 50L suits boaters, anglers and anyone whose bag may end up in the water, because YETI calls it submersible and airtight when closed, but it weighs 5.2 lb empty and has no locking mechanism. Skip the Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Medium for travel: it is a 58 L gym duffel with a single shoulder strap, no backpack straps listed, and no fabric denier published. Best for: travellers who want one soft bag for flights, road trips and gear hauling and want to know what the water claim really covers.

New to duffel bags? Our plain-English Duffel Bags, Explained guide decodes every spec first.

A travel duffel is a soft box with handles, and most of what separates a good one from a bad one is printed on the spec sheet if you know which lines to read. The word that causes the most trouble is waterproof: a coated fabric sheds rain, but a bag is only waterproof if the maker says the closed bag keeps water out and backs that with a rating. We read the manufacturer pages for four widely sold duffels between 50 and 63 litres and compared them on the wording of the water claim, the fabric as published, the empty weight, the carry system and the warranty. One of the four is a submersible bag its maker describes as airtight when closed, two are coated travel duffels with backpack straps, and one is a gym bag that often gets bought for trips it was not designed for.

  • Patagonia publishes the body fabric in full: 14.1-oz 900-denier 100% postconsumer recycled polyester ripstop with a recycled TPU-film laminate.
  • Padded shoulder straps let it carry as a backpack and detach when not in use.
  • When empty, the duffel stuffs into its zippered side pocket for storage.
Know before buying
  • Patagonia calls the fabric weather-resistant and makes no waterproof or submersion claim for the bag.
  • At 1,180 g it is heavier than the Eagle Creek despite holding less.

Which one is right for you?

How we judged the field

Five things decide whether a duffel is right for a trip. First, the water claim as the maker words it: waterproof with a stated test covers the closed bag, while weather-resistant or water-resistant describes the fabric. Second, the fabric as published, meaning denier plus the coating or laminate, because a bare denier figure says little without the coating. Third, empty weight, since every gram of bag comes out of a checked-baggage allowance. Fourth, the carry system: whether there are backpack straps and whether they stow or detach. Fifth, the practical extras, which are lockable zippers, packing into its own pocket, and the warranty behind the bag.

The field splits three ways. Coated travel duffels with backpack straps are the mainstream, and the Patagonia Black Hole 55L and Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 60L are two of the most widely sold. Submersible duffels are a separate, heavier class built around a sealed zipper, represented here by the YETI Panga 50L. Then there are sports duffels of similar volume that get bought for travel because they cost less, and the Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Medium is the common example. We compared the closest sizes each maker sells and took every figure from the maker’s own page for that size.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L

Buy itCheck price on Amazon

The Black Hole 55L is the bag with nothing hidden on its spec sheet. Patagonia lists the body as 14.1-oz 900-denier 100% postconsumer recycled polyester ripstop with a recycled TPU-film laminate, the lining as 200-denier recycled polyester with a PU coating, the weight as 1,180 g and the dimensions as 22.8 x 13.3 x 9.5 inches. Padded shoulder straps turn it into a backpack and detach when you do not want them, the base is padded, and reinforced daisy chains on the outside give lashing points. A zippered side pocket opens from outside or inside, and the empty bag stuffs into it. The trade-off is in the wording: Patagonia says weather-resistant, not waterproof, and gives no IP rating, so rain on a truck bed is within its brief and a swim is not. It is also heavier than the Eagle Creek for less volume, and lockable zippers are not listed. It is made in a Fair Trade Certified factory and covered by the Ironclad Guarantee. This is the one for travellers who want a hard-wearing bag whose materials are fully documented.

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 60L Duffel Bag

Buy itCheck price on Amazon

The Cargo Hauler 60L gives up some fabric weight and gains almost everything else a traveller asks for. Eagle Creek lists it at 2 lb 3 oz with an internal capacity of 63 L, so it is the lightest travel duffel here and the roomiest. The main fabric is 100% recycled 600D polyester with a water-resistant TPU coating, backed by 1680D ballistic polyester, and the maker says it is made without the intentional use of PFAS. The feature list is long: stowable backpack straps, a wide D-shaped opening, an internal divider, two end compartments for dirty gear, external compression straps, a padded base, and lockable zippers that meet at a central lock point. It packs into its own end pocket. The trade-off is that 600D is a lighter cloth than the Black Hole body, and the water claim is resistance, not waterproofing. The product page names the No Matter What warranty. It suits travellers who check a bag often, want to lock it, and value low weight and organisation over the heaviest fabric.

YETI Panga 50L Waterproof Duffel

It dependsCheck price on Amazon

The Panga 50L is a different kind of bag, and the size is the closest YETI sells to this group, with 75 and 100 litre versions above it. It is the only bag here with a waterproof claim that covers the closed bag: YETI calls it submersible and airtight, with RF-welded seams and a HydroLok zipper that keeps water out when properly closed. The shell is a high-density nylon YETI calls ThickSkin and describes as puncture-resistant, over an EVA molded bottom, with two interior mesh pockets and lash points outside. The cost is weight and convenience. It is 5.2 lb empty, the denier is not published, YETI says none of its duffels have a locking mechanism, and the care instructions include rinsing and lubricating the zipper. YETI does say the 50L is carry-on compatible for most airlines, and it carries a three-year warranty. Buy it for boats, rafts, duck blinds and wet truck beds. For airports and hotels it is a heavy answer to a problem most trips do not have.

Under Armour UA Undeniable 5.0 Medium Duffle Bag

Skip itCheck price on Amazon

The Undeniable 5.0 Medium is one of the most commonly bought duffels around, and for the gym it earns that. Under Armour lists 58 L of volume at 22.5 oz, a vented pocket for shoes or laundry, a dual water bottle slip pocket, a front organisation pocket with molle webbing, and TPU-coated, foam-lined bottom and side panels. The reasons to skip it for travel are all on the same page. The carry system is a padded grab handle and a single removable shoulder strap, with no backpack straps listed, which matters once 58 L is full. The water protection is a UA Storm finish described as highly water-repellent, a surface treatment that sheds a shower but is not a laminated shell. The material is given only as 100% polyester with no denier, so there is no way to compare its fabric with the 600D and 900D bags above. Lockable zippers and a warranty term are not listed either. Keep it for practice and weekends by car, and choose a purpose-built travel duffel for flights.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L vs Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 60L Duffel Bag: which should you buy?

The Black Hole 55L and Cargo Hauler 60L do the same job, and the choice comes down to fabric against features. Patagonia uses a 900-denier ripstop with a TPU-film laminate and publishes the fabric weight as well, while Eagle Creek uses a 600D polyester with a TPU coating reinforced by 1680D ballistic polyester. Eagle Creek answers with a lower empty weight, 2 lb 3 oz against 2 lb 9.6 oz, and more listed volume, 63 L against 55 L.

Choose the Eagle Creek if you check bags on flights, because lockable zippers, end compartments and stowable straps are all listed and the bag sits a price tier lower. Choose the Patagonia if the bag will be dragged, lashed to a roof or thrown in a truck, where the heavier laminated ripstop and daisy chains matter more than organisation. Both pack into their own pocket, both carry as a backpack, and neither is waterproof by its maker’s own wording.

What to look for

  • Water wording: read whether the maker says waterproof with a rating such as IPX7, or weather-resistant and water-resistant, because the second describes the fabric and not the closed bag.
  • Denier and coating together: a figure such as 900D or 600D only means something alongside the coating or laminate, so look for both on the materials line.
  • Empty weight: published weights here run from 22.5 oz to 5.2 lb, and the bag’s own weight counts against an airline allowance.
  • Backpack straps: check that two shoulder straps are listed, and whether they stow or detach, since a single shoulder strap is hard work on a full 55 to 60 litre bag.
  • Stated capacity and dimensions: compare litres and external dimensions for the exact size, because a bag sold as 60L can list 63 L and sizes within one line differ a lot.
  • Warranty and locks: look for a named warranty on the product page and for lockable zippers if the bag will be checked.

Our final take

For most trips the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L is the duffel to buy: a fully published 900-denier laminated ripstop, removable backpack straps, and a pocket it stuffs into. The Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 60L is the better value and arguably the better airline bag, lighter and roomier with lockable zippers and stowable straps. The YETI Panga 50L is the right call only when the bag may end up underwater, which is what its submersible claim and 5.2 lb weight are for. The Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 Medium is a good gym bag and a poor expedition bag. If you organise the inside with cubes, our packing cubes comparison covers that, and for long, rigid gear such as skis see our ski bags comparison.

Questions, answered

Is the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel waterproof?

Patagonia does not call it waterproof. The product page describes the body as weather-resistant and abrasion-resistant recycled polyester ripstop with a TPU-film laminate. The laminate keeps water from soaking through the fabric panels, but the bag has a conventional zipper and stitched seams, and Patagonia gives no IP rating or submersion claim. Treat it as a bag that handles rain on a roof rack or a wet tarmac, and put anything that must stay dry inside a dry bag.

What makes a duffel waterproof instead of water-resistant?

The claim has to cover the closed bag, not just the fabric. Of the four bags here, only the YETI Panga carries that kind of claim: YETI calls it submersible, meaning airtight with no air or water getting in or out when the HydroLok zipper is properly closed. The Patagonia and Eagle Creek use coated or laminated fabric and describe it as weather-resistant or water-resistant, which is the accurate wording for a bag with a standard zipper. Our dry bags comparison goes deeper on IP ratings and roll-top closures.

Can a 55 to 60 litre duffel go in the overhead bin?

It depends on the airline and how full the bag is. Soft duffels compress, but the external dimensions on the spec sheet are what a gate agent measures against. Patagonia lists the 55L at 22.8 x 13.3 x 9.5 inches and Eagle Creek lists the 60L at 26.75 x 10.25 x 13.5 inches, and YETI says its 50L is carry-on compatible for most airlines. Check your airline's published limit before you fly, and see our carry-on luggage comparison if cabin fit is the main requirement.

Are backpack straps on a duffel worth having?

For anything beyond a car boot, yes. A loaded 55 to 60 litre duffel is awkward on one shoulder, and two straps free your hands for stairs, ferries and long terminals. The Patagonia uses padded straps that detach, and Eagle Creek describes its straps as stowable. A duffel is still not a framed pack: there is no hip belt on these bags, so the load sits on your shoulders, which is fine for transfers and tiring for long walks.

Why skip the Under Armour Undeniable if it is so popular?

It is popular as a gym bag, and for that job it is fine. The problem is using it as a travel duffel. Under Armour lists a top grab handle and a single shoulder strap with no backpack straps, a water-repellent finish instead of a laminated shell, and no fabric denier. It holds 58 L, close to the travel duffels here, but the published details do not describe a bag built for baggage belts or long carries.
