For premium ANC earbuds, a handful of criteria did the heavy lifting: noise cancellation; battery life with ANC switched on, which is the figure most spec sheets bury; fit options and bud weight; codec support; water resistance; and how much of the feature set actually lights up on your phone rather than the one the brand designed for.

That last point matters more than spec sheets admit. One of these earbuds is an ecosystem play, superb on its home platform and ordinary off it, and the other three behave the same on iPhone and Android. The AirPods Pro 3 are the easiest recommendation here for iPhone owners, because nothing else pairs this level of noise cancelling with this little friction. Apple rates the ANC at up to twice that of the AirPods Pro 2, battery life is up to 8 hours with ANC on (24 with the case), and the buds and case both carry an IP57 rating, the highest here. At 5.55 g per bud with five tip sizes from XXS to L, it is also the lightest and most size-flexible fit in the group.

The extras are the ones owners use daily: Find My with Precision Finding, Live Translation, heart rate sensing for workouts, and Apple’s Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features. The catch is the mirror image of the appeal. Apple’s requirements list only Apple devices, so on Android most of that goes dark. Buy these because you live in Apple’s world, not in spite of it.

The WF-1000XM6 is the pick for everyone outside Apple’s ecosystem. Sony calls it its best noise cancelling yet, driven by a new QN3e processor it rates 3x faster than the chip in the WF-1000XM5, and it matches the AirPods on runtime at up to 8 hours with ANC on and 24 hours in total with the case. It is also the only pair here with LDAC, alongside AAC, SBC and LC3, and Sony adds DSEE Extreme upscaling for compressed files.

Multipoint, wireless charging and the Sony Sound Connect app work the same on iPhone and Android, which is what makes it the runner-up rather than a niche pick. The trade-offs: an IPX4 rating where the AirPods have IP57, a slightly heavier bud at approx. 6.5 g, and the highest price tier in this group.

Bose builds this pair around silence and fit. It calls the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds its best, quietest in-ear noise cancelling, and nine combinations of eartips and stability bands give it the most adjustable fit here. CustomTune adapts the sound to your ears, Bose Immersive Audio and a new Cinema Mode spatialize music and video, and multipoint, wireless charging and an adjustable EQ round it out on both iPhone and Android.

Why “it depends”? Battery. Bose rates it at up to 6 hours in Quiet Mode, and 4 hours with Immersive Audio on, against 8 hours for the Apple and Sony pairs. Bose also lists no aptX or LDAC codec on the product page, and the rating is IPX4. If a locked-in fit and maximum hush matter more than runtime, it is a strong choice; if you want the longest listening day, the Sony does more per charge.

This is the hard one, because the Momentum True Wireless 5 has the most audiophile spec sheet of the four: aptX Lossless, up to 24-bit/96 kHz audio, an 8-band graphic EQ and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Its user-replaceable batteries, in both the buds and the case, are a genuinely useful idea that none of the others offer, and its call setup uses four mics per bud, including a bone-conducted mic.

But these are noise-cancelling earbuds, and on that job the numbers work against it. Sennheiser’s own spec table rates the buds at 12 hours with ANC off and 6 hours with ANC on, so the 40-hour headline figure is not what an ANC buyer gets. Its lossless mode runs over aptX Lossless, so it needs a phone that supports that codec, and the IP54 rating covers the earbuds only. Sennheiser also makes no ranking claim for its noise cancelling, where Apple, Sony and Bose each claim their best. Unless fidelity is your single priority and your phone supports aptX Lossless, skip it.

This is the real decision for most shoppers, and it is clear-cut: match your phone. Both are rated at up to 8 hours with ANC on and 24 hours with the case, and both makers claim their strongest noise cancelling yet. On an iPhone, the AirPods Pro 3 add Find My with Precision Finding, hearing-health tools, heart rate sensing and an IP57 rating the Sony cannot match. On Android, those features largely disappear, while the Sony keeps multipoint and its app on either platform, plus LDAC on Android phones that support it.

If you own both kinds of device, the Sony is the safer bet because it behaves the same everywhere. If you are all-in on Apple, the AirPods Pro 3 are the better buy and sit a price tier lower.

What to look for

• Match the ecosystem first. The single biggest driver of your happiness is whether the earbuds are built for your phone. Everything else is secondary.
• Battery with ANC on is the number that matters. Headline figures often assume cancellation is off; the Sennheiser here drops from 12 hours to 6 once ANC is on.
• Check the fit system. Stability bands (like Bose’s) lock in and seal well; a wider range of tip sizes (like Apple’s XXS to L) helps smaller ears.
• Read the codec list only if your phone matches it. LDAC and aptX Lossless help only on phones that support them, and iPhones use AAC.
